Why combine vitamin D and K2 together
Synergistic improvement in bone mineral density (BMD): Combining vitamin D and K2 increases total BMD (especially in the lumbar spine and hip) more effectively than either vitamin alone, as shown in multiple RCTs and meta-analyses.
Better activation of osteocalcin: Vitamin D boosts production of osteocalcin (a bone-building protein), while K2 fully carboxylates (activates) it, directing calcium into bones and improving bone strength and mineralization.
Reduced bone loss and fracture risk: Postmenopausal women and osteoporosis patients experience slower age-related bone loss, better bone quality, and potentially lower fracture rates with the combination.
Prevention of soft-tissue calcification: Vitamin D mobilises calcium, but K2 activates matrix Gla protein (MGP) to inhibit calcium deposition in arteries and soft tissues, potentially reducing vascular calcification risk.
Improved arterial elasticity and reduced stiffness: Some studies show the combo helps maintain or restore vascular flexibility, particularly in populations with low vitamin status.
Lower levels of inactive (undercarboxylated) proteins: Significantly reduces undercarboxylated osteocalcin and MGP, markers of poor vitamin K status linked to worse bone and heart health.
Potential cardiovascular protection: Observational and some interventional data link adequate levels of both vitamins to lower risks of coronary artery disease, cardiac remodelling, and cardiovascular events.
Enhanced overall calcium metabolism: Optimizes calcium utilisation—promoting deposition in bones/teeth while minimising harmful buildup in arteries and kidneys.
Safe and well-tolerated: Combination supplementation at standard doses (e.g., 1000–5000 IU D3 + 90–180 μg MK-7 daily) shows no significant adverse effects in clinical trials.
